Challenge.
CRRC Tangshan approached Fordyno in 2019 with the objective to create a set of concept designs to inform the direction of their next generation of intercity EMU’s.
Looking to increase their market presence and create a unique design DNA for the brand CRRC Tangshan were looking for a differentiator to their competition.
With Fordyno’s extensive knowledge and experience penning some of China’s most recognisable high-speed platforms CRRC Tangshan looked to Fordyno to help create their own brand direction.
Approach
Galvanised by the opportunity, Fordyno’s design team conducted design workshops with CRRC Tangshan’s internal design team to understand the company culture, vision and current platforms within their portfolio.
These workshop informed by market trends, layout opportunities and design directions researched and developed by Fordyno led to the teams to settle with the 3 design directions below.
The result has led to a set of design blueprints to inform future platform developments for the prominent brand.

Concept 1 - Red Crowned Crane

The Red Crowned Crane represents a symbol of longevity and immortality within China, the design pays homage to the longevity and development of the rail systems within China.

The first of the 3 designs was to feature a more traditional interior design drawing inspiration from China’s rich heritage in art and design.

The design features classic materials, tones and finishes that bring maturity to these spaces that can only be found in the success that afford this level of travelling comfort.

Concept 2 - Benevolent Qilin

Taking direct inspiration from the Qilin, with a fearsome visage but a gentle, protective nature. This influence closely matches the nature of China’s high-speed trains - powerful and swift, but comfortable and safe. It is this aspect of the Qilin that has inspired the exterior design.

The interior design is modern and comfortable with a more European inspired style. Each section is elevated by increasingly refined trim to differentiate between the different classes.

Concept 3 - Connections

Concept 3 is designed is heavily influenced by the technological developments within China. The design itself acts as a differentiator in what can be seen as a crowded internal market and is set to stand visually apart from its competition.

The interior design is clean and modern with a colour palette of cool, neutral tones brought to life by a bold copper accent.
